Snow and Sun

Today was a fun run weather-wise. Before my Gorham run, I headed in to the Hannaford down there to pick up a few things. It was sunny when I went in. By the time I came out (15-20 minutes), the sky looked dark and ominous. As soon as I hit the road, big wet snowflakes were hitting me. Really. Hitting me. The strong wind was making sure I was pelted. About 20 minutes of that, I was thinking I'd be frozen before my eight miles were up. To my surprise, the sun came out and the clouds seemed to have been whisked away. I warmed up fairly fast.

Lather, rinse, repeat...Seemed like I was on the snow/sun cycle for the entire run. It was interesting how quickly the weather could change. I think it helped keep my focus on not me and the miles went quickly by.

Two Xtremely Different Runs

Four was short on time for today's run, so we just met up at the Back Cove for an easy lap. I complained about the beautiful weather because I'd dressed according to the morning weather report (the problem for having to pack in the a.m. for a p.m. run). I had tights, long sleeve tech shirt and no hat (lucky to have left sunscreen in the car). And I was too hot during our run.

I said bye to Four and headed to Congress St. to find the Fore River Trail for the rest of my miles. By the time I'd started running, our sunny day was done. In fact, the temp dropped and the sky started spitting. I would end the run glad for my attire and even wishing for gloves!

At first I was a bit disappointed. I thought the trail was just the little mile strip off of Congress and Hobart, but then I found a trail map that showed more at the Fore River Sanctuary . I ran there and was delighted to find single track trails that made you forget you were in the city. The Jewel Falls were a delight. It was about here that I regretted not wearing my trail shoes cause the rain (now falling a bit harder) had made much of the trail pretty slippery. Just took it a little easier than I would have needed to on the ups and downs. Finished up with 11 total miles for the day.

I can't imagine that I'll be running anywhere else in Portland for the rest of this semester. It was great.

Fun Recovery

I was happy that Dora was going to join me on my recovery run, thinking that company would help ease any discomfort. Well, I ended up just happy for her company! Besides an initial twinge of the IT band, I felt great!!!

We ran a mixture of neighborhood roads and trails. Almost 3.5 miles were at a fairly respectable 9:15/mile. We did have a stretch of really mucky trail where we were slowly picking and choosing our footsteps. It made the other miles look very slow.

Dora introduced me to a bunch of small trail sections that can make up a pretty good run. The chance meeting with her on a run turned into a win-win situation for me. I get great company and learn new trails/routes each time!

She needed to meet her daughter to get a prom dress : ) ! It made for a perfect length recovery run for me. I got in slightly over 5 miles and was very happy with how all the parts felt. Knock on wood!

5:42:42

Friday and Saturday were scheduled days off - a nice little rest before my longest single run before Pineland. My next two weekends have longer total mileage, 34 and 36 respectively, but my 50k is bookended with days off. Yay!

I got up Sunday and started readying for the run. Coffee, definitely. Breakfast...hmmm... Clarice's blueberry bread and yogurt. Then I laid out my calories for the run: PBJ cut into 12ths, sandwich baggy stuffed with pretzels, two packets of Honey Stinger Chews, and two Gu gels. For my hydration, I made up a quart of Gatorade and put a 12 oz Coke in the fridge for my last "lap". The day was sunny and I knew that wasn't enough fluids, but I'd be diluting the Gatorade with nearly as much water with each refill and I could always make more up.

I'd planned to be out the door by 9am. I made it by 9:20 (that's on time in my book!). The first leg was to be on the roads. As I ran past my friend Grace's house, I realized I hadn't fed her kitties yet (I was looking in on them for the weekend). Knowing that my run was going to take a long, long time, I headed back to the house to get her key, ran back, fed and watered the cats and spent less time than usual visiting them. I did stop my time during the kitty care. When I got to the end of King Rd, I decided to add the dirt road on Packard' farm and some of their fields. Between that and the road, I'd done 10.7 miles at under 9:30's by the time I got back to refuel.

I'd had a Gu and 16 oz of 1/2 and 1/2 Gatorade on the run. When I got back I ate a few squares of the PBJ, 1/2 pack of chews, some pretzels and water. I changed my sports bra and shirt and into my trail shoes. Rick headed out with me in his first pair of Inov8's. He's on the comeback trail - again. He told me he should get an award for "come-back runner of the year(s)" cause that's all he does. :c It was nice to have his company for almost four miles. We stopped at a stream to analyze animal tracks. On my next lap I took pictures. We've yet to look at them to positively identify them (a bigger predator).

I stopped back in the house with nearly 18 total miles down. More of the same foods. Another sports bra/shirt change and new socks. Oh, and sunscreen...unless that was after the first stop. I was still feeling pretty good.

Pretty much ran the same course in the fields as the previous "loop". This time I started feeling hungry during the run. Good to find out that I wasn't eating enough. Since my loops weren't that long, I hadn't brought anything other than Gatorade with me. About 4 miles in, I started noticing that I'd find myself walking without planning to. That's okay, but I needed to recognize it so that I could make myself start running. When I plan my walks I always have a planned start-running point. It's too easy to let yourself walk too much if you don't realize you're doing it!

I got back to the house with only 5.6 miles left to run. By now, my feet (mostly the big toes) were pretty sore. I finished up what remained of my food supplies. Oh! And had my Coke. It tasted nearly as good as it did on the 50 miler!! Rick asked if I'd had enough or if he could get me anything. I said no to both things, but I just didn't feel like thinking of what more to have or taking any more time. Besides changing one last time, I used the roller a bit before heading out. This time when I went to put my shoes on, I called to Rick to get something to grab a tick. While he was flushing that one, I'd gotten another, and another. Two were on the shoes themselves, one just under the top of my sock.

It was hard to get moving again, but, you just do it. I concentrated on running and only walking by choice. I paid attention to my Garmin trying to pick where I should run to get me back with the proper mileage. Heading back up the driveway to finish, I saw the Garmin turn 31 miles. Immediately, I sat down and took my shoes off (and picked off another tick). I walked barefooty back up in the grass. The total time out of the house was 5:42:42, but the entire event took a little under seven hours.

Even before any more fuel, I showered. The layers of salt and dirt washed away. The feeling of having ticks on me lasted longer.

Today, most of me felt good. Four joined me for a walk around the Back Cove. Nice to move the pieces. Even nicer was to see Emma running! She looked really good :) !

Fields

Just had four to do today so ran before we headed to Gorham. The fields are just starting to dry up. I wasn't really able to run more ground, but could run the same with less mud and wet feet.

I knew a turkey hunter had put up a blind, but was surprised to find on my return that I had run right by it on my way out. I decided I'd blame wearing my Inov8 cap frontwards instead of any lack of observational power on my part. Heading out the terrain was such I needed my head down. On the way back, it was uphill so I had my head up more often. Usually I turn the cap backwards on trails so my view is less obstructed.

I made sure I had a little left on my four when I got back home. I peeled of my shoes and socks and ran barefoot for the last little bit. Turns out I really needed to watch my footing...The dandelions are in full bloom and loaded with bees!

City Run

I wanted to find and try the Fore River Trail today, but only accomplished half of that. I scoped out a place to park, but then headed to Borders for some books I wanted. By the time I got out, it looked like rain. The weather report said possible T-storms. If I was familiar with the trail that probably wouldn't have stopped me, but...I drove to the International Ferry Terminal to change and run down there where I knew I would pretty much always have somewhere to duck into. By the time I came out from the terminal, the skies were clear. Oh well, next time. So I ran my normal route to S. Portland and back for and easy eight. Felt pretty good.

Loopy

I wanted to run the trails behind USM, but didn't think I'd have enough time to do my 12 miles. So I opted to run to the x-country trail that Gorham High uses (thanks, Dora, for showing it to me). The only drawback is the trail is just a mile long ; I did lots of loops - eight to be exact. I was back to the car just minutes before Sam's class let out so I know I made the right choice. Besides, loops, even short ones, on trail are better than most anything on the road anyway!

Speed Work (of sorts)

Last Saturday I ran 10 miles at Pineland and was pretty happy with my 10:22 min/mile pace. Today I ran 8 miles there at 9:42 min/mile pace. The difference - Danielle. She was doing 20 miles there to assess her plan to do the 50K. Most Monsters were going to be elsewhere and I decided to keep her company for the first 8. Rick and I had Sea Dog tickets and I wouldn't have time for more. Good thing cause I couldn't have kept up with her for any more! As it was, I told her to go ahead just after the 6 miles mark. I knew she wanted to keep me company, but I also knew she was testing herself and didn't want to hold her back. Maybe if Rick and I hadn't discovered that Gritty did pitchers the night before, I could have toughed it out a little better: ) I made it back to the parking area to see Danielle heading out for the 2nd part of the course. The Garmin said I only was at 7.5 so I headed back into the woods to get that last .5.

I had such a good time running with Danielle. Lots of talk on motherhood and running. It was also good to push myself a bit. After I let her go, I dropped back to 10:10 min/mile. Still a decent pace for me. All in all, I was really happy I decided to join her. I hope the run gave her the confidence to go for the 50k!

Lets see if I can add on the data from Chris's Garmin:

Treasure

An easy 10.5 today. I didn't want it to be quite so easy, but...A neighbor was burning stuff, making the fields less desirable and there was more rain than I thought last night making the fields even less desirable. So I wimped out and ran the roads. I was strangely rewarded, finding 17 pennies on my rural route. I do tend to focus on the ground and find many "treasures" on my runs.

Cool Run

Linda and I headed to Pineland today to introduce her to the Campus side. The weather was, ummm, cool. It has been a while since I've worn tights, long sleeve tee, gloves, and a headband. I was happy to have them all.

We did eight miles in just under 12 min/mile pace. I think it helped Linda to realize the 25K was definitely in her reach. Also, she now knows that our fields are good training.

After we headed in to the visitor center to get some coffee to help warm up. A yummy cookie also helped!

Monster Runs

No, they weren't very long runs, but they were runs with the best type of people - Trail Monsters! Yesterday I met up with Dora in Gorham for an eight miler. She showed me where the Gorham schools run cross country and pointed out other possibilities. I had a great time. We talked non-stop. What a cool person! And a great runner. I'm surprised I could talk as much as I did cause the pace was a little faster than I'd normally have done (of course that's why I ran my fastest Bruiser yet; running with Monsters and pushing my pace a bit).

Today, I was in Portland and met up with Four. He couldn't meet me till later than I planned to start so I did 3.25 solo and then he joined me for 4.46. Before Christmas break, we'd been running fairly regularly together; It was good to catch up. I hope we can be a little more regular for the remaining of this semester.

Monday

Monday was a beautiful day to run in Portland. I had a route, pace, and distance in mind, but didn't follow any of it. I just ran kind of ran where ever and stopped when I ended back near where I started. It was fun. I ended up with 7 miles at a relaxed pace.

Perhaps I should mention a yummy, successful lunch to run on. Sam and I stopped at Mister Bagel's headed out of Gorham. I had the new french toast bagel with cream cheese and bacon. Great combination! Next time I would say light on the cream cheese, though.

Ryan (my Ryan, not Snowman) had an interesting run. Friday night someone mentioned that a Relay for Life was being held at Brown. Ryan decided to check it out. He headed down and joined, running 150 laps around the 300 meter indoor track! He said there was one other person who he knew did 125, but was pretty sure he did the most. He stopped a little after 4 am. I don't think he'd been doing runs longer than 8 miles so the 27.9 was a lot.

Field Work

Ran the same 10 miles as last Sunday. The fields are still pretty soggy and sap ones energy. That being said, it's amazing how much easier it was this week since I was running it after 10 miles the day before instead of 24! I was also happy to find that 10 in our fields are harder than 10 at Pineland. Probably because there is actually a trail there. I still want to get in more runs there, but feel confident that running here is good training.

Pineland

I can't remember the last time at ran at Pineland. I'm pretty sure if I ran over 8 miles there, my IT band was hurting. So I was anxious to see how I would fare today running 10. I was hoping all the field/trail running I've been doing would have helped condition me to handle whatever it is about Pineland that my left side doesn't like.

I didn't leave enough time to get there for the TM group run. I left a note on Jim's car so they might be on the lookout for me. Even though I was teasing, I really did expect to hear Jim out there somewhere! The conditions were better than I expected after all the rain. There was only one field that had lots of fairly fresh manure. I was very happy that I stuck some gloves in with my gear at the last minute. It was pretty cool out there.

Drum roll....My left IT band was perfectly fine with the run!!! Maybe it won't be an issue this year. Then I won't have an excuse not to get close to my 10 hour goal - Yikes!

An Exceptional Day

I didn't run yesterday. The weather was uninspiring and I was tired of changing in whatever bathroom in Portland/Gorham I could find. It also helped knowing I could run today and not have a really long run to do on the weekend.

So I headed out a little after 11am for six in weather a little worse than yesterday, but, with my own room to change in and a shower after, still a happier situation. I did a loop instead of an out and back (what I normally prefer). Averaged just under 9min/mile and enjoyed the route I usually avoid.

Longer, Faster, Hotter

Today was surprising in a couple of ways. It was hot, damn hot. Again hotter than the weather report had led me to believe it'd be. However, my body seemed to like it in that I found myself easily running pretty fast. My first mile was under 8 minutes. I did slow over the course of the nine mile run, but still managed to run 8:35's. OK, a few disclaimers.... I let myself stop to drink water/Gatorade often and stopped the time and it was mostly on the Back Cove (i.e. flat), but I still was surprised by my ease at that pace. Those soggy fields are really tough :)

Short, Fast (relatively), Good

I was a bit overdressed setting out in Gorham; It was 10 degrees cooler at home. Still, I felt good. After a day off, I was pretty well recovered from my mileage. I also stuck to the flattest roads I could find.

Around mile 3, when I was about to cross rte 114, I waited for a vehicle to turn. Dora was driving! She pulled over and we chatted for a bit, both surprised to have run into the other. I was happy to be running really strong at the time; Last time I crossed paths with a Monster, I was nearly ill and walking (IHOP incident). I'm hoping to get to run with her on one of my Gorham afternoons.

I added an extra mile to my planned four just cause I felt so good!

A Week Off

No, not a week off from running - a week off in my planning. For this year's 50 training, I took last year's log and just copied the distances into this year's log, just a day earlier. I didn't realize that this year Memorial Day comes a week later. I think I've decided to put another "easy" week after this one before my final 3 build up and then taper. Should be fine.

Big Weekend

I wish I felt more like writing because, it really was a big week and weekend. My total for the week was 57 miles. Of that, 24 was yesterday, 10 today.

Again I ran my long run in fat ass fashion, stopping at the house twice to refuel. The first leg was on the road for 11. This was just in the interest of time. As it was, it was getting hot by then since I didn't get an early start (I was waiting to see if Ryan might want to run with the Monsters at Pineland - college kids...just want to sleep!). Refueled with the usual - pretzels, Honey Stinger Chews, pbj sections, and Gatorade.

Next lap I headed out into the fields. Pretty soggy going, but the wetness felt cool and, therefore, good. Across the street (the hill in the fat ass), I found a new path into the woods. It was only about a half mile, but I appreciated its cool shade. It dead-ended at a small pond. I was amazed at all the frog, frog eggs, and frog activity. I was thinking I better not tarry there too long (Rick might start to worry), but it wasn't till the mosquitoes started biting that I moved. Back to the house with 19.2 in the bank. More of the same refreshments and then back to the fields. The last 4.8 were pretty laborious miles. At the bridge, I took off my shoes to run barefoot back up....Stepped on a thorn with my first step. No biggy. Pulled it out and finished up. Whew!

Today, I didn't get out till 2pm cause I wanted to wait till Ryan left. I dropped him at the bus stop and headed back to run. It was hot. The ground was soft. I plodded, but finished. Am actually looking forward to not running tomorrow even though I'm in Portland all day.

I'm Feeling Much Better Now

Today's run went really well. I got in nine on the roads in Gorham. The weather was warm and I was surprised at how crusted with salt I was after. Luckily I had water with me.
